Gothenburg Opera names Vincenzo Milletarì principal conductor

The Gothenburg Opera has announced Italian conductor Vincenzo Milletarì as its next Principal Conductor, beginning in the 2027/28 season.

Milletarì, 36, succeeds British conductor Christopher Warren-Green, who has held the position since 2021. The appointment marks another significant step in the Italian conductor’s growing career across Northern Europe, where he has become a familiar presence at many of the region’s leading opera houses.

Born in Taranto, Milletarì studied in Italy and refined his craft under the guidance of conductors including Riccardo Muti and Pier Giorgio Morandi. He first attracted international attention through his work in the Italian operatic repertoire, particularly Verdi, before expanding his activities throughout Scandinavia and Germany.

The conductor is no stranger to Gothenburg. He made a successful company debut leading Verdi’s Otello and is scheduled to return for performances of Luisa Miller before officially assuming his new role.

In announcing the appointment, the Gothenburg Opera highlighted Milletarì’s artistic vision and his ability to combine a deep understanding of the operatic tradition with a collaborative approach to music-making.

Over the past decade, Milletarì has built strong relationships with several Nordic institutions, including the Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, the Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen, and the Norwegian National Opera. His appointment in Gothenburg further strengthens his position as one of the most prominent young conductors working in the Scandinavian opera scene.

While the Gothenburg Opera may not command the international profile of Europe’s largest opera houses, it remains one of the most important lyric institutions in the Nordic region. The appointment gives Milletarì his highest-profile permanent position to date and could prove a significant platform for the next stage of his career.

The conductor will begin his tenure in Gothenburg at the start of the 2027/28 season.
