The Berliner Philharmoniker will share the final concert of its New York and South America tour with audiences worldwide on Friday, 23 October. Broadcast live from Buenos Aires’s Teatro Colón, the performance brings together chief conductor Kirill Petrenko and pianist Víkingur Ólafsson for a programme pairing Brahms’s First Piano Concerto with Richard Strauss’s Also sprach Zarathustra.
The concert concludes a journey that began with four performances at Carnegie Hall, including its season-opening gala, before continuing to Bogotá’s Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo and Brazil’s Sala São Paulo. Three concerts at the Teatro Colón, from 21 to 23 October, form the final stop. The trip marks the orchestra’s first return to South America since its 2000 tour with Claudio Abbado, as well as its first visit to Colombia.
For the finale, Ólafsson takes the solo part in Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1, a work whose symphonic scale makes the relationship between pianist and orchestra central to its drama. After the interval, Strauss’s Nietzsche-inspired tone poem moves from its famous sunrise opening into a much broader exploration of orchestral colour, tension and ambiguity.
The free transmission offers listeners beyond Argentina an opportunity to experience the orchestra at the close of its tour in one of the world’s celebrated opera houses. Only a Digital Concert Hall registration is required, with repeat broadcasts offering further opportunities to watch.
