In this atmospheric release video, soprano Ruby Hughes performs Corpus Christi Carol by Benjamin Britten, offering an intimate glimpse into her new recital album Amidst the Shades. The video forms part of the album’s visual presentation and captures the reflective, almost suspended quality of Britten’s setting.
Filmed and directed by Jessie Rodger, the video creates a carefully composed visual world that mirrors the music’s stillness and inward intensity. The visual aesthetic — complemented by millinery by Katherine Elizabeth — enhances the sense of ritual and timelessness that runs through the piece.
On the album, Hughes is joined by Jonas Nordberg (lute & archlute), who also created the arrangement heard here, and Mime Yamahiro Brinkmann (viola da gamba). Together, they explore a programme spanning English music from Dowland to Britten and beyond, tracing a line from Renaissance melancholy to modern introspection.
