Lieselot De Wilde and Illuminans Tenebras bring Hildegard von Bingen’s music into dialogue with Ottoman and Sufi traditions.
This week’s Moto Rec is O splendidissima gemma, performed by soprano Lieselot De Wilde and Illuminans Tenebras, from their album Divan-e Shohud – The Book of Visions.
Under the artistic direction of oud player Tristan Driessens, the ensemble explores affinities between Hildegard’s single-line melodies and Ottoman modes, placing her sacred songs alongside Eastern improvisation. The project draws connections between Christian mysticism and Sufism through their shared interest in music as a spiritual experience.
Released by Ramée on 11 September 2026, the album offers a distinctive setting for Hildegard’s music, inviting listeners to encounter these medieval songs through a different musical perspective
