German conductor and composer Oscar Jockel will assume the dual role in Porto from January 2027, marking another milestone in the career of one of Europe’s most promising young conductors.
German conductor and composer Oscar Jockel has been appointed Principal Conductor of the Remix Ensemble and Conductor in Residence at Casa da Música in Porto. He will take up the position in January 2027.
The appointment places Jockel at the artistic helm of the Remix Ensemble, one of Europe’s leading ensembles dedicated to contemporary music. Based at Casa da Música, the ensemble has built an international reputation for championing new music while collaborating with many of today’s foremost composers and conductors.
Jockel has established himself as one of the most closely watched conductors of his generation. Between 2022 and 2024, he served as Assistant Conductor to Kirill Petrenko at the Berliner Philharmoniker after distinguishing himself in the Philharmonie Berlin Conducting Competition and participating in the Karajan Academy. He previously worked as Assistant Conductor to Matthias Pintscher at the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris, further strengthening his ties to the contemporary music world. In 2023, he received the Herbert von Karajan Prize in recognition of his achievements as both conductor and composer.
The appointment comes as Jockel’s international career continues to expand. During the 2026/27 season, he is scheduled to make his debuts with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, and at Opernhaus Zürich, where he will conduct a new production of Péter Eötvös’s Angels in America with the Musikkollegium Winterthur. He will also return to the Brussels Philharmonic, Prague Philharmonia and the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, while several premieres of his own compositions are planned in Cologne, Berlin and other venues across Europe.
