Directed by Martin Mirabel and made with the involvement of Argerich’s daughter Annie Dutoit-Argerich, the 80-minute film is due to premiere in October.
The first trailer for Martha, a new feature-length documentary about pianist Martha Argerich, has been released through Argerich’s official Instagram account and that of her daughter Annie Dutoit-Argerich.
Directed by Martin Mirabel, the 80-minute documentary is the result of ten years spent following Argerich, offering an intimate portrait centred on two constants in the pianist’s life: her friends and music.
According to Swiss Films, Mirabel followed Argerich over the course of a decade, capturing the pianist away from the conventional framework of a career retrospective. With the involvement of Dutoit-Argerich, the film seeks to portray an artist who, at 85, remains notably elusive despite more than six decades at the centre of international musical life.
The newly released trailer gives a first glimpse of that approach. Argerich is seen in informal conversations and private surroundings, looking through photographs and reflecting on memory, the past and her continuing curiosity about life and music.
Rather than dwelling on honours or achievements, the film appears to focus on Argerich’s relationships and on the spontaneity that has long characterised both her personality and her music-making.
Martha is a Swiss-French production by Actua Films and Artline Films, with RTS Radio Télévision Suisse and ARTE. It is produced by Chantal Bernheim, Patrick Siegenthaler, Olivier Mille and Victoire Buff, with cinematography by Audrey Morel and Antoine Munoz and editing by Svetlana Vaynblat.
The film is scheduled to have its world premiere in October 2026. Further details about the premiere and its subsequent distribution have yet to be announced.
It is not the first documentary to offer an unusually personal portrait of Argerich through her family. In 2012, her youngest daughter, Stéphanie Argerich, directed Bloody Daughter, an intimate film about her mother and her father, pianist Stephen Kovacevich.
Martha, however, approaches Argerich from a different perspective. Mirabel is credited as director, while Annie Dutoit-Argerich — Argerich’s daughter with conductor Charles Dutoit — has been closely involved in the project and appears in the trailer in conversation with her mother.
The documentary runs for 80 minutes and will be available with French, Italian, English and German subtitles.
