The Latvian National Opera and Ballet opens the 2026 Riga Opera Festival with a new production of La bohème, available to stream free on Operavision from 3 July.
Directed by LAURA, the production reimagines Puccini’s perennial masterpiece through a contemporary visual lens while preserving the emotional intimacy at the heart of the story. The creative team features French designer Fabien Lédé, responsible for the sets, lighting and video design, while costumes are by fashion designer Fyodor Podgorny.
The cast is led by Ukrainian tenor Dmytro Popov as Rodolfo and Latvian soprano Inga Šļubovska-Kancēviča as Mimì, with Arvo Volmer conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of the Latvian National Opera.
Premiered in Turin in 1896, La bohème remains one of the world’s most beloved operas, blending youthful exuberance, lyrical beauty and heartbreaking tragedy in the story of a group of struggling artists in Paris. This new staging offers a fresh perspective on the classic while retaining the score’s warmth, humour and devastating emotional impact.
The performance was recorded on 4 June 2026 and will remain available free on Operavision until 3 January 2027.
