Riccardo Chailly conducts Verdi’s Messa da Requiem with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro alla Scala in a performance available free on ARTE Concert from November 1.

The solo quartet brings together soprano Anna Netrebko, mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova, tenor Fabio Sartori and bass Michele Pertusi. Alberto Malazzi is the chorus master.

Verdi composed the Requiem in memory of the Italian writer Alessandro Manzoni, and conducted its premiere in Milan in 1874. The work moves between moments of quiet prayer and passages of dramatic intensity, from the hushed opening to the soprano’s final plea in the Libera me.

The performance will be available on demand from November 1.
