Julia Hagen | Cellist

Austrian cellist Julia Hagen has rapidly established herself on the international classical music stage with her captivating performances and technical mastery. Born into a musical family in Salzburg in 1995, Hagen began playing the cello at the age of five, studying with renowned teachers such as Heinrich Schiff and Jens Peter Maintz.
As the 2024 UBS Young Artist Award recipient, she was invited to perform as a soloist with the Vienna Philharmonic during its annual residency at the Lucerne Festival. Over the past season, Hagen has also performed with prestigious orchestras across Europe, including the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra of Bayerischer Rundfunk, and the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona. Additionally, she made her US debut with the Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of Franz Welser-Möst.
Beyond her orchestral appearances, Julia Hagen is an avid chamber musician, collaborating with leading artists and participating in prestigious festivals such as the Salzburg and Lucerne. Her repertoire spans from the Baroque to contemporary works.
In 2019, she released her debut album, featuring Brahms’ two cello sonatas, recorded with pianist Annika Treutler on the Hänssler Classic label.
Julia Hagen also takes part in the latest album by French violinist Renaud Capuçon, dedicated to the works of Richard Strauss.
Hagen plays a 1684 Francesco Ruggieri cello, generously on loan to her from a private collection.
The following video shows Julia Hagen performing at an empty Vienna Konzerthaus during the pandemic. She plays Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 and, with her father, cellist Clemens Hagen, performs Jean Barrière’s Duo for Two Cellos.
