The Russian pianist turns to one of Alberto Ginastera’s most intimate works in a new video from his forthcoming Latin American album, Mi Historia Americana – Sur.
Daniil Trifonov performs Alberto Ginastera’s Milonga, Op. 3 No. 1, in a new video released by Deutsche Grammophon, offering a glimpse of his forthcoming album Mi Historia Americana – Sur.
Written in 1938, Ginastera’s brief piece draws on the milonga, a musical and dance tradition deeply rooted in the Río de la Plata. Rather than emphasising its more rhythmic character, the work unfolds as an intimate and lyrical miniature, with a gently flowing melody and an unmistakably Argentine atmosphere.
The recording forms part of Trifonov’s exploration of Latin American and Caribbean music in Mi Historia Americana – Sur, due for release by Deutsche Grammophon on 2 October 2026. The album follows My American Story – North, the first instalment of the pianist’s musical journey through the Americas.
The new collection ranges across Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Peru, with solo works by composers including Ginastera, Gabriela Lena Frank, Camargo Guarnieri, Ernesto Lecuona and Heitor Villa-Lobos, as well as Trifonov’s own Tango. It also includes two orchestral works with the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra: Ary Barroso’s Aquarela do Brasil and the world-premiere recording of Osvaldo Golijov’s Cuadros del Sur.
For Trifonov, the project also has a personal connection to the region. His wife, pianist Judith Ramírez, was born in the Dominican Republic, where Trifonov and his family spent several months during the Covid pandemic — a period that helped inspire his exploration of Latin American repertoire.
Mi Historia Americana – Sur will be released digitally, on two CDs and as a three-LP vinyl edition on 2 October.
