Israel Philharmonic and Lahav Shani extend their musical partnership

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that Lahav Shani, its Music Director since 2020, will continue leading the ensemble until 2032.
In a heartfelt statement on social media, Shani expressed his gratitude and enthusiasm for this new chapter: “I’m honored and delighted to continue my musical journey with the Israel Philharmonic for another five years. Since my first day as Music Director, I have had the honor to work with exceptional musicians and a dedicated staff, all of whom share profound passion for music and artistic excellence. The Philharmonic is my home and I hope to continue this shared musical journey with the audience and musicians in the years to come.” Shani also added, “We are delighted and excited! To many more years of music making and good friendship.”

Lahav Shani, a Tel Aviv native, is recognised as one of his generation’s most dynamic and versatile conductors. He first rose to prominence after winning the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in 2013. Following that victory, his career flourished with high-profile engagements and leadership positions. Shani succeeded Zubin Mehta as Music Director of the Israel Philharmonic, a challenging and prestigious role given Mehta’s legendary 50-year tenure.
In addition to his work with the Israel Philharmonic, Shani has been the Chief Conductor of the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra since 2018, a position he will leave to take up the role of chief conductor of the Munich Philharmonic in September 2026. A multi-talented musician, Shani is also an accomplished pianist who often performs solo or in chamber music settings.
