A miniature can reveal an artist’s voice with particular clarity. In this performance, Isata Kanneh-Mason turns to Sergei Prokofiev’s Prelude from 10 Pieces, Op. 12, often known as the “harp prelude,” a work built on delicate textures and flowing patterns that evoke the instrument from which it takes its nickname.
Rather than emphasising virtuosity, Kanneh-Mason shapes the piece with restraint and transparency, allowing its shifting colours and subtle rhythmic profile to emerge naturally. The result is a reading that highlights the refinement behind Prokofiev’s writing, where simplicity is carefully constructed and every gesture contributes to a sense of quiet momentum.
The performance also offers a first glimpse of her upcoming album Prokofiev, to be released on 10 April 2026 by Decca Classics. The recording places Piano Concerto No. 3 at its centre, performed with the Philharmonia Orchestra under Ryan Bancroft, and brings together works spanning different periods of the composer’s output, from early piano pieces to transcriptions from Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella.
