Wagner’s early grand opera receives its first-ever staging at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus in a landmark production conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann.
As the Bayreuth Festival continues, audiences around the world can watch one of this year’s most significant productions from home. STAGE+ is streaming the opening-night performance of Richard Wagner’s Rienzi, marking the opera’s first-ever staging at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus.
Long absent from the Bayreuth canon despite being Wagner’s earliest major success, Rienzi opens a new chapter in the festival’s history with a production by Alexandra Szemerédy and Magdolna Parditka. Conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, the performance stars Andreas Schager in the title role, alongside Gabriela Scherer as Irene, Jennifer Holloway as Adriano, Andreas Bauer Kanabas as Stefano Colonna, Michael Nagy as Paolo Orsini, Matthias Stier as Baroncelli and Michael Kupfer-Radecky as Cecco del Vecchio.
Recorded live on 25 July 2026, the performance features the Bayreuth Festival Chorus and the Orchestra of the Bayreuth Festival. Outside Germany, Austria and Switzerland, the stream is available exclusively on STAGE+.
