Evan Rogister named music director of Deutsche Oper am Rhein

The American conductor Evan Rogister will take up the position of Generalmusikdirektor at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein at the beginning of the 2027/28 season.

The company, which spans the twin German cities of Düsseldorf and Duisburg, announced the appointment today following a unanimous vote by its selection committee. Rogister will assume the post in August 2027 for an initial five-year term, coinciding with the arrival of the incoming General Director, Ina Karr.

Rogister served as principal conductor of the Washington National Opera and the Kennedy Center Opera House Orchestra from 2018 to 2025. His international career includes regular appearances at major houses such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, and the Semperoper Dresden. He made his debut with the Deutsche Oper am Rhein during the 2023/24 season, conducting a production of Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold.

In his new role, Rogister will oversee the musical leadership of one of Germany’s largest opera ensembles, collaborative partnerships with the Düsseldorf Symphony and the Duisburg Philharmonic, and the company’s extensive repertoire.
