Atlanta Opera announces Ring Festival for 2029

The company will present two complete cycles of Wagner’s ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ directed by Tomer Zvulun and conducted by Iván López Reynoso at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

The Atlanta Opera has announced its Ring Festival 2029, presenting two complete cycles of Richard Wagner’s tetralogy, Der Ring des Nibelungen, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre in June 2029.

The festival marks the conclusion of a project that began in 2023, when the company started presenting each of the four Ring operas over four consecutive seasons.

Production details and regional context

The festival will feature the productions directed by Tomer Zvulun, the company’s General and Artistic Director, and conducted by Principal Conductor Iván López Reynoso. The artistic team includes scenic and projection design by Erhard Rom, costume design by Mattie Ulrich, lighting design by Robert Wierzel, wig and makeup design by Anne Nesmith, and live action direction by Ran Arthur Braun.

By offering two full cycles, the company provides the opportunity to experience the complete saga in a single week. This is the first time a resident opera company presents the complete tetralogy in the American Southeast. While the creative team has been confirmed, the formal casting for the 2029 festival cycles has not yet been announced.

Current season concludes with Götterdämmerung

The announcement coincides with the culmination of the company’s current multi-season rollout. This month, The Atlanta Opera is staging Twilight of the Gods (Götterdämmerung), running from May 30 through June 7, 2026, at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre. Converted into a new production by Zvulun and conducted by Roberto Kalb, this final installment features Stefan Vinke as Siegfried, Lise Lindstrom as Brünnhilde, and David Leigh as Hagen, alongside Le Bu (Gunther), Sylvia D’Eramo (Gutrune), and Aleksey Bogdanov (Alberich).

Programming at the Molly Blank Center

Festival programming beyond the mainstage performances will incorporate The Atlanta Opera’s future home, the Molly Blank Center for Opera and the Arts. Currently under development along the Atlanta Beltline corridor, the new facility is scheduled to open in Fall 2027.

The center will serve as a venue for festival events, including recitals, lectures, public conversations, and community gatherings.

Regarding the announcement, Tomer Zvulun stated:

“Ring Festival 2029 is a transformative moment for us and for Atlanta. The first completely new Ring cycle in America in the 2020s. The first Ring ever presented in the American Southeast. And it’s happening in a city that has proven, time and time again, that it belongs on the world stage. From the Cobb Center to our new home on Atlanta’s Beltline, the Molly Blank Center for Opera and the Arts, we will create a cultural gathering place, where performances, surrounding events, and the warmth of our city come together around one of music’s greatest masterworks.”
