One of the major Wagner productions of 2026 is coming to ARTE Concert. From 15 August, the platform will stream Richard Wagner’s Das Rheingold, recorded at this year’s Salzburg Easter Festival, with Kirill Petrenko conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker in a new staging by Kirill Serebrennikov.
The production marked a significant moment in the history of the festival: the Berliner Philharmoniker returned to the Salzburg Easter Festival in 2026 after 13 years in Baden-Baden. The orchestra, which founded the festival with Herbert von Karajan in 1967, has chosen Wagner for its return, with Das Rheingold launching a new Ring des Nibelungen cycle under Petrenko and Serebrennikov.
Serebrennikov sets Wagner’s opening instalment in a global post-apocalyptic world, combining the mythology of the Ring with imagery and cultural references drawn from different traditions. Projections include footage shot in Iceland, while dance, African sculptures and additional performers contribute to a production conceived as a trans-cultural Gesamtkunstwerk.
Christian Gerhaher takes on Wotan, with Leigh Melrose as Alberich, Brenton Ryan as Loge, Catriona Morison as Fricka, Sarah Brady as Freia and Jasmin White as Erda.
The performance was recorded on 1 and 6 April 2026 at the Felsenreitschule during the Salzburg Easter Festival.
