British organist Anna Lapwood has announced on social media that she is stepping down as Music Director at Pembroke College, Cambridge, to dedicate herself entirely to performing.
Lapwood, who moves seamlessly between classical and popular music, has gained worldwide recognition, largely thanks to her dynamic presence on social media. With over a million followers on TikTok and over 700,000 on Instagram, she has introduced a new audience to an instrument often perceived as traditional. Through her platforms, she shares rehearsal clips, the challenges of an organist’s life, and engaging explanations about the mechanics of pipe organs.
Beyond social media, Lapwood regularly performs concertos with leading symphony orchestras and gives recitals across Europe and the United States. She has also collaborated with artists like Alison Balsom, Bonobo, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Announcing her departure in a heartfelt post, Lapwood wrote: “This is, without a doubt, one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever made, and I can’t describe how much I’m going to miss the wonderful musicians in the Chapel Choir and Girls’ Choir. They have taught me so much. Thanks to them for being patient with me as I have cried in almost every service since telling them I was leaving… what is it about a good hymn that makes the tears flow?”
