Following their return to the Salzburg Easter Festival, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Kirill Petrenko bring Das Rheingold to Berlin, continuing a pattern that has become familiar in recent seasons: major staged productions presented first in Salzburg are later revisited in concert form at the Philharmonie.

The performances in Salzburg marked the orchestra’s first appearance at the festival in over a decade, with a new staging of Wagner’s cycle directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. Now, in Berlin, the focus shifts to the musical architecture of the score, presented without staging but with the same core cast.

At the centre is Christian Gerhaher, appearing as Wotan — a role debut that has drawn particular attention. Around him, a cast of experienced Wagner singers shapes the drama of power, renunciation, and transformation that launches the Ring cycle.

As the prologue to Der Ring des Nibelungen, Das Rheingold unfolds without interruption, its continuous structure highlighting Wagner’s control of long-range tension.

The livestream begins 15 minutes before the performance.
