Teatro Real announces 2026–27 season with world premiere of Lorca-inspired opera

The Teatro Real has unveiled its 2026–27 season, centred on the world premiere of a new opera based on Bodas de sangre by Federico García Lorca. The work, composed and conducted by Manuel Busto, will receive its first performances in March 2027 in a production staged by Bárbara Lluch.

Titled Bodas de sangre, the two-act opera is based on Lorca’s 1932 play and forms part of the commemorations marking the centenary of the Generación del 27. The production is a co-production with the Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville and will feature the Teatro Real’s orchestra and chorus. The cast is led by soprano Marina Monzó as the Bride, alongside José Antonio López as Leonardo and Santiago Sánchez as the Bridegroom, with performances scheduled between 9 and 14 March 2027.

The premiere stands out within a season that also marks the theatre’s 30th anniversary since its reopening in 1997, and the second under music director Gustavo Gimeno. The programme opens in September with a new production of Manon Lescaut by Puccini, conducted by Nicola Luisotti, with Sondra Radvanovsky and Saioa Hernández sharing the title role.

Among the staged productions are new accounts of Le nozze di Figaro by Mozart, directed by Robert Carsen; Simon Boccanegra by Verdi, staged by Pierre Audi; and Káťa Kabanová by Janáček, conducted by Gimeno. Wagner’s Tannhäuser, also led by Gimeno, and Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia, staged by Damiano Michieletto, complete the main operatic offerings.

The season also includes several concert performances, with artists such as Anna Netrebko, Sonya Yoncheva, and Jakub Józef Orliński, as well as a performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion conducted by Teodor Currentzis. In addition, the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra is set to appear at the Teatro Real for the first time, conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, marking the 150th anniversary of the Bayreuth Festival.
