Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Simon Rattle express support for Andris Nelsons

Musicians of the Symphony Orchestra of the Bavarian Radio, together with their chief conductor Sir Simon Rattle, have expressed support for Andris Nelsons following the decision to end his tenure at the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 2027.

The message was shared on Instagram by the account of the Boston Symphony Orchestra musicians, which published an image of a formal letter dated March 26, 2026.

In the letter, the musicians of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, together with Sir Simon Rattle, state that they “greatly regret the termination” of Nelsons’ contract and describe him as a conductor of “exceptional artistry and musical depth.”

They also express concern about the decision-making process, writing that they were “appalled to hear that this decision was made without the knowledge and approval of the very heart of the BSO, the orchestra itself.”

The statement is signed by the orchestra board of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor, Sir Simon Rattle.

The message adds to a series of public expressions of support for Nelsons in recent days, both within the Boston Symphony Orchestra and internationally.

The decision to end Nelsons’ tenure has prompted a growing response from musicians, with statements, public gestures, and messages of support highlighting tensions surrounding the orchestra’s future direction.
