The SWR Symphonieorchester presents a programme that brings together two composers often seen as occupying very different musical worlds: Jean Sibelius and Anton Bruckner. Conducted by Eva Ollikainen and streamed live from the Stuttgarter Liederhalle, the concert pairs Sibelius’s Violin Concerto with Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4, the “Romantic”.

The evening opens with Sibelius’s Violin Concerto, one of the central works of the repertoire, performed by Inmo Yang. The piece, known for its technical demands and introspective character, reflects Sibelius’s highly personal approach to form and thematic development.

In the second half, Bruckner’s Fourth Symphony unfolds on a very different scale. Often associated with expansive architecture and spiritual intensity, the work stands as one of the composer’s most widely performed symphonies, with its evocative horn calls and monumental climaxes.

Despite the contrasts between the two composers, historical connections remain. Sibelius travelled to Vienna in 1890 hoping to study with Bruckner and later expressed deep admiration for his symphonies. This programme places their music side by side, offering a perspective on two distinct yet historically linked approaches to the symphonic tradition.
