The Norwegian National Opera & Ballet will begin a new production of Richard Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen in January 2027, launching a multi-season journey through one of the most ambitious works in opera with a new staging of Das Rheingold conducted by Edward Gardner and directed by Tatjana Gürbaca.
The company announced that the four parts of Wagner’s monumental cycle will be presented between 2027 and 2029, culminating in two complete Ring cycles in 2029. The project opens on January 22, 2027, with Das Rheingold, which will run through February 11 on the main stage in Oslo.
Described by the company as “the beginning of a masterpiece,” the new production marks the start of a long-term artistic undertaking for the Norwegian Opera. In addition to the staged performances, the institution is also organizing educational initiatives around the work, including a lecture series called “Studie-Ringen,” designed to introduce audiences to Wagner’s universe and the themes of the cycle.
The new Ring will be staged by Gürbaca, the acclaimed German director known for psychologically detailed interpretations and complex portrayals of human relationships. Her appointment also places her among the relatively small number of women to direct a complete Ring cycle. Gardner, Music Director of the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet since 2024, will conduct the performances.
The cast of Das Rheingold will feature a largely Nordic ensemble, including Yngve Søberg as Wotan, Magnus Staveland as Loge, Johannes Weisser as Alberich, Astrid Nordstad as Fricka, and Margrethe Fredheim as Freia. The production team also includes set designer Henrik Ahr, costume designer Barbara Drosihn, and lighting designer Stefan Bolliger.
In presenting the project, the company sought to make Wagner’s work more approachable for wider audiences, acknowledging that the composer’s music dramas are often perceived as difficult or reserved for specialists. Through articles, talks, and introductory events, the Opera aims to guide audiences through the mythology, philosophy, and musical language of the cycle.
Das Rheingold, the prelude to the cycle, introduces the central conflict between the pursuit of power and the possibility of love. The opera begins with the theft of the Rhinegold by Alberich and follows Wotan’s attempts to secure authority through the cursed ring, setting in motion the events that unfold across Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung.
The performances will be sung in German with Norwegian and English subtitles. Tickets for the production are expected to go on sale as part of the company’s 2026–27 season release on May 7.
