Chief conductor Simon Rattle leads a program featuring three Mozart symphonies: No. 39, 40, and 41 (Jupiter).
The BRSO explains in its program: Today, these symphonies are usually performed individually. However, there is much to suggest that Mozart’s last three symphonies form an internal unity, a triad, a world of their own. The significant symbolic number 3 appears repeatedly, for example, in the three repeated chord strikes at the beginning and end of the Jupiter Symphony. Certain tonal patterns create connections. The fact that these works can be seen as a cohesive, interrelated triptych is also due to their differences. Each has its own distinct sound (different wind instrument configurations), spans an individual expressive range, and is based on unique musical archetypes.
