A debut that resonated beyond Barcelona
When Lise Davidsen made her staged debut as Isolde this January at the Gran Teatre del Liceu, the event immediately drew international attention. The Norwegian soprano, long associated with Wagner’s repertoire, had deliberately waited to approach one of the most demanding roles in opera — and chose Barcelona as the setting for this milestone.
The production also marked her return to the stage following maternity leave, adding further anticipation to performances that were closely followed across the operatic world. For many observers, this Isolde represents a defining chapter in Davidsen’s artistic development — particularly as she prepares to sing the role at the Metropolitan Opera in the near future.
Now, the production receives its digital premiere on Liceu OPERA+, allowing international audiences to encounter this widely discussed interpretation beyond the theatre.
A staging shaped for both stage and screen
Directed by Bárbara Lluch, the new staging approaches Tristan und Isolde as an exploration of love conceived as an absolute force — one that transcends social convention, morality, and ultimately life itself. Rather than focusing narrowly on narrative detail, the production creates open spaces that foreground the psychological and emotional dimensions of Wagner’s drama.
In the pit, Susanna Mälkki conducts the Orquestra Simfònica del Gran Teatre del Liceu, shaping the long dramatic arcs and dense orchestral textures that define the score. The digital release presents a specially edited version of the production, adapted for streaming while preserving the scale and intensity of the live performances.
For those who followed the January performances from afar — or who wish to revisit one of the season’s most closely watched operatic events — this streaming offers the opportunity to experience Davidsen’s first staged Isolde in full.
