Teatro La Fenice streams a colourful production of Il trionfo dell’onore, Alessandro Scarlatti’s only known comedy and a work regarded as an early model for the development of opera buffa.
Premiered at Naples’s Teatro dei Fiorentini on 26 November 1718, the opera sets a libretto by Francesco Antonio Tullio centred on the unscrupulous Riccardo, whose pursuit of women and refusal to accept the consequences of his behaviour set in motion an increasingly tangled web of romantic rivalries. Four couples populate the comedy, allowing Scarlatti to move between arias, duets, quartets and larger ensembles, including the concertato that closes the second act.
This Teatro La Fenice production, recorded in March 2025, is conducted by Baroque specialist Enrico Onofri and directed by Stefano Vizioli. Pop artist Ugo Nespolo provides the sets and costumes, creating a vividly coloured visual world of geometric forms and comic-book imagery that draws on both commedia dell’arte and slapstick.
Giulia Bolcato leads the cast as Riccardo, alongside Rosa Bove as Leonora, countertenor Raffaele Pe as Erminio, Francesca Lombardi Mazzulli as Doralice and Giuseppina Bridelli as Rosina.
The stream premieres on 18 September at 19:00 CET on Operavision and remains available on demand until 18 March 2027.
