The festival plans two new productions for the first time, alongside revivals of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Tannhäuser.
The Bayreuth Festival has revealed the first details of its 2027 edition, announcing two new productions that will headline next summer’s programme. According to information presented at the festival’s press conference, Bayreuth will begin producing two new stagings each year, reflecting what artistic director Katharina Wagner described as stronger audience interest in new productions than in revivals.
The first new production will be Wagner’s Lohengrin, directed by Italian stage director Ilaria Lanzino in her Bayreuth debut. Finnish conductor Tarmo Peltokoski is scheduled to make his festival debut on the podium. The announced principal cast includes Michael Spyres in the title role, Elsa Dreisig as Elsa, Judit Kutasi and Jordan Shanahan.
The second new production will be Parsifal, with Christian Thielemann conducting and theatre director Ersan Mondtag making his Bayreuth debut as stage director. The production will feature stage and costume designs by artists Neo Rauch and Rosa Loy. The announced cast includes Piotr Beczała as Parsifal, Mika Kares as Gurnemanz and Michael Volle as Amfortas.
Alongside the premieres, Bayreuth plans to revive Matthias Davids’ production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, conducted by Simone Young, with Michael Volle as Hans Sachs, Klaus Florian Vogt as Walther von Stolzing and Vida Miknevičiūtė in the cast.
Tobias Kratzer’s acclaimed production of Tannhäuser will also return for what has been announced as its final festival season. Thomas Guggeis is scheduled to conduct, marking his Bayreuth debut, with Klaus Florian Vogt in the title role.
The announcements offer the first glimpse of the festival’s artistic plans for 2027, one year before Bayreuth celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2028.
