Yulianna Avdeeva explores the visionary world of late Liszt

The pianist performs Légende No. 2 in a striking film recorded at Tippet Rise Art Center, offering a glimpse into her upcoming album Metanoia, devoted to Franz Liszt’s late piano works.

Yulianna Avdeeva has released a beautifully filmed performance of Franz Liszt’s Légende No. 2, recorded at the Tippet Rise Art Center in Montana. The video serves as a first look at Metanoia, her forthcoming album for Pentatone, to be released on 28 August.

Rather than focusing on the flamboyant virtuosity often associated with Liszt, Metanoia turns to the composer’s late piano works, music that anticipated the harmonic language of the twentieth century. In these concentrated, often austere pieces, Liszt abandoned many of the conventions of Romantic piano writing in favour of daring harmonies, compressed forms and an introspective musical language that would later influence composers including Bartók, Debussy, Ravel and Scriabin.

Avdeeva approaches these works as a deeply personal and philosophical journey, revealing a Liszt preoccupied with faith, mortality and the limits of human experience. The programme also includes the monumental Sonata in B minor, placing one of the central masterpieces of the piano repertoire alongside the composer’s final, visionary creations.

Metanoia will be released on CD and digital platforms on 28 August by Pentatone. You can learn more about the album and access the streaming and pre-release links: here
