Gustavo Dudamel to unite New York Philharmonic and Simón Bolívar Orchestra at World Cup Final

Gustavo Dudamel will conduct a landmark joint performance by members of the New York Philharmonic and Venezuela’s Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra during the first-ever FIFA World Cup Final halftime show, taking place on 19 July at New York New Jersey Stadium (MetLife Stadium).

The appearance will mark the first time musicians from the two orchestras perform together. According to the organisers, the performance will serve as a tribute to Venezuela following the devastating earthquakes that recently struck the country, while also highlighting a message of international solidarity.

The orchestral collaboration forms part of the inaugural FIFA World Cup Final halftime show, produced by Global Citizen in partnership with FIFA. Curated by Coldplay’s Chris Martin, the 11-minute performance will feature an international cast including Madonna, Shakira, Justin Bieber, BTS, Burna Boy, Coldplay, the PS22 Chorus, Sesame Street and The Muppets.

For Dudamel, the event carries particular symbolic significance. The Venezuelan conductor concludes his tenure as Music and Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic this summer before assuming the same position at the New York Philharmonic in September. Bringing together musicians from his homeland’s flagship orchestra and the ensemble he is about to lead represents a milestone in that transition.

The performance also underscores Dudamel’s enduring relationship with El Sistema, Venezuela’s internationally renowned music education programme, from which the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra emerged and where the conductor began his own musical journey.

Unlike a traditional concert presentation, the orchestral performance has been specially adapted to the unique constraints of a football stadium halftime show. With only a brief interval available and strict requirements to protect the playing surface, the musicians will perform standing, using lightweight equipment designed to allow the entire production to be assembled and removed within minutes.

Although the musical performance itself will last approximately 11 minutes—a reference to the eleven players on each football team—the halftime interval will be extended to around 25 to 30 minutes to accommodate the production.

The event also supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative aiming to raise US$100 million to expand access to education and football opportunities for children around the world.
