Moto Rec: Weber’s Der Freischütz comes alive in a brilliant wind ensemble transcription

Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz has captivated audiences since its premiere in 1821, becoming one of the defining works of German Romantic opera. Our latest Moto Rec highlights a newly released YouTube performance of ‘Introduzione. Victoria, der Meister soll leben’, offering a fascinating glimpse into an early nineteenth-century transcription that reimagines the opera for wind ensemble.

Rather than presenting Der Freischütz in its original orchestral form, the performance draws on an early transcription by Karl Flachs, prepared around 1822 and published in 1825. The excerpt offers a glimpse of how Weber’s celebrated opera was reimagined for Harmoniemusik, highlighting the richness, colour and expressive possibilities of the wind ensemble while preserving the spirit of the original score.

The performance also serves as an introduction to the accompanying album, which explores Flachs’ adaptation of Weber’s opera in greater depth. Created at a time when arrangements for wind ensembles helped bring popular operatic repertoire to a wider public, the transcription offers a fascinating perspective on one of the landmarks of German Romantic opera.

Whether you are already familiar with Weber’s masterpiece or discovering it for the first time, this performance provides an engaging opportunity to experience the music from a different angle while appreciating the craftsmanship of one of the nineteenth century’s most successful operatic transcriptions.
