Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson confirmed as principal flutist of the Berlin Philharmonic

The Berliner Philharmoniker has confirmed that flautist Stefán Ragnar Höskuldsson has successfully completed his probationary period and now officially holds the position of principal flute in the orchestra.

Höskuldsson has served in the role since September 2025. His confirmation follows the orchestra’s standard trial period for permanent appointments.

Career across major US orchestras

Before joining the Berlin Philharmonic, Höskuldsson held principal flute positions with two major American ensembles. He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra from 2008 to 2016 and later served with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra from 2015 to 2025.

Born in Iceland, he began his musical training at the Reykjavík School of Music with Bernhard Wilkinson before continuing his studies at the Royal Northern College of Music under Peter Lloyd.

Solo, chamber, and teaching activity

Alongside his orchestral work, Höskuldsson maintains an international career as a soloist and chamber musician, performing regularly across Europe, the United States, and Japan.

He is also active as a teacher, with positions at the DePaul University School of Music and the Pacific Music Festival, and regularly gives masterclasses.
