Charles Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette is available to stream free of charge on OperaVision in a production from the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma that relocates Shakespeare’s tragedy from Renaissance Verona to Italy in 1943, during the civil conflict between fascists and partisans.
Premiered in 1867, the opera focuses almost entirely on the relationship between the two young lovers. Gounod and his librettists, Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, distilled Shakespeare’s sprawling drama into a work driven by lyricism and intimacy, giving Roméo and Juliette four extended duets that chart the evolution of their relationship from first attraction to their final farewell.
This staging by Luca De Fusco places the familiar story against the backdrop of wartime Italy, highlighting the divisions that separate the protagonists and the violence that ultimately destroys them. Daniel Oren conducts the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma Orchestra and Chorus.
The production is led by soprano Nino Machaidze as Juliette and tenor Vittorio Grigolo as Roméo, two singers closely associated with the French and Italian repertories. They are joined by a cast that includes Nicolas Courjal as Frère Laurent, Mihai Damian as Mercutio and Christian Senn as Capulet.
Available until 12 December 2026, this stream offers an opportunity to revisit one of the most enduring operatic adaptations of Shakespeare’s tragedy in a modern historical setting.
