Soprano Rainelle Krause dies aged 37 after short illness

Rainelle Krause, an American coloratura soprano, has died following a short hospitalization, according to a statement shared by her family on social media. No further details about her age or the circumstances of her death were immediately disclosed.

In their statement, her family described Krause as “a brilliant talent defined by grit, fearlessness, curiosity, intelligence, integrity, and resilience,” adding that “her skyrocketing career was cut short.” They also noted that her performances will remain as a lasting testament to her artistry.

Krause was widely recognized for her interpretation of the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, a role she performed at numerous international venues, including the English National Opera, Royal Danish Opera, Dutch National Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and Deutsche Oper Berlin, among others. Critics frequently highlighted the clarity and brilliance of her coloratura, with The Guardian describing her voice as “diamantine.”

She also appeared with companies such as the Nashville Opera, Atlanta Opera, Theater Basel, and Opéra Orchestre Montpellier Occitanie, and covered performances at the Metropolitan Opera. In addition to her operatic work, her recent engagements included concert appearances and festival performances, including Carmina Burana at the Brevard Music Center.

Among her other roles were Lucia in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Oscar in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera, Zerlina in Mozart’s Don Giovanni (cover), and Pat Nixon in John Adams’ Nixon in China. She also collaborated on interdisciplinary projects, including Mystique, a production combining opera and circus.

Krause was the recipient of several awards, including First Prize at the Fielder Grant Competition, Third Prize and Audience Award at the Orpheus Competition, and recognition at the Texas Camerata Baroque Aria Competition. She was also a finalist in competitions such as the Lois Alba Competition and the International Mildred Miller Competition, and reached regional finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

According to her family, a public event to celebrate her life will be announced at a later date.
