Paris Opera 2026–27 season to culminate Ring cycle with festival and new productions

The Opéra national de Paris will culminate its staging of Wagner’s Ring des Nibelungen in the 2026–27 season, presenting the cycle in a festival format alongside a series of new productions and repertory revivals.

The final instalment, Götterdämmerung, is scheduled for October, followed by complete cycles of the tetralogy in November as part of a dedicated Ring festival. The production, staged by Calixto Bieito and conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado, brings together a cast that has appeared throughout the project. The company’s website confirms that the festival will gather an “exceptional cast” for the cycle’s conclusion.

New productions and contemporary works

The season will feature several new productions, including Perle noire: Meditations for Joséphine by Tyshawn Sorey, staged by Peter Sellars and performed by Julia Bullock. The work, first created in California, pays tribute to Josephine Baker.

Mozart will play a central role with two new productions. A new staging of Don Giovanni, directed by Louisa Proske, will be conducted by Finnegan Downie Dear and Stephanie Childress, with Peter Mattei among the cast. The season will also include a new production of Idomeneo, directed by Wajdi Mouawad and conducted by Antonello Manacorda.

French repertoire will be highlighted in a new staging of Werther by Jules Massenet, directed by Robert Carsen and conducted by Nathalie Stutzmann, marking her debut at the Paris Opera. The title role is expected to be shared by Benjamin Bernheim and Michael Spyres.

The programme also includes the world premiere of Miroir de nos peines by Hèctor Parra, based on the novel by Pierre Lemaitre. The production will be conducted by Ingo Metzmacher and directed by Mariame Clément.

Repertory and returns

Alongside the new productions, the season will include a range of repertory revivals. These are expected to feature works such as Turandot by Giacomo Puccini, as well as staples of the Italian and French repertoire including Il barbiere di Siviglia, Don Pasquale, and Hamlet.

The 2026–27 season will be the sixth programmed under general director Alexander Neef and is set to take place before a period of planned closures affecting the company’s venues in the coming years.
