Salzburg Festival parts ways with Markus Hinterhäuser with immediate effect

The Salzburg Festival has announced that its Artistic Director, Markus Hinterhäuser, is stepping down with immediate effect following what were described as “irreconcilable differences of opinion and disagreements.”

Hinterhäuser, who has led the festival since 2017, remains under contract until 30 September 2026. However, both parties have agreed to release him from his duties immediately. The terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

In a statement, President Kristina Hammer and Executive Director Lukas Crepaz acknowledged that the past weeks had “disconcerted many” and confirmed that the decision followed discussions between the Supervisory Board and Hinterhäuser. They thanked him for his work, noting that he had “made his mark on the Festival’s programme” and contributed to its international standing.

The statement also emphasised continuity, adding that preparations for both the Whitsun Festival and the summer edition are proceeding as planned, with staff working “with full commitment and passion.”

No successor has yet been named, leaving the festival without an artistic director at present.

The programme for the 2026 edition has already been completed, and planning for 2027 is reportedly at an advanced stage.

The 106th edition of the festival is scheduled to take place from 17 July to 30 August 2026.
