Martha Argerich has published a video statement on Instagram expressing her support for Argentina’s public universities, as well as for teachers and educational workers amid ongoing debates over university funding and salaries in the country.
In the video, Argerich describes public and free university education as “fundamental” and as part of “the future of young people in all countries where the right to education exists.” Although she says she is “far away,” the pianist wished to express her support for “everything related to education and the possibility of developing through knowledge and culture.”
Argerich also referred to the role of teachers, professors and educators, calling their work “enormously important for civilisation” and for “the functioning of a just and supportive society.”
The statement comes ahead of a new federal university march scheduled in Argentina for 12 May, organised amid claims from university unions and authorities regarding salary deterioration, budget constraints and the lack of updated funding for public universities.
Born in Buenos Aires in 1941, Argerich spent her childhood in Argentina before moving to Europe with her family in the mid-1950s to continue her musical studies. Despite developing most of her international career abroad, the pianist has maintained close ties with Argentina throughout her life and career.
