Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim together again in Berlin

Martha Argerich has shared a striking photograph of herself with longtime friend and collaborator Daniel Barenboim, offering a rare glimpse of the two legendary musicians together during this year’s Intonations Chamber Music Festival in Berlin.

Posted on Argerich’s Instagram account, the image shows the pianist embracing Barenboim backstage. The caption reads simply: “Daniel Barenboim and Martha Argerich at the Intonations Festival this weekend.”

The photograph was taken during the 2026 edition of the Intonations Chamber Music Festival, held at Kühlhaus Berlin from 11 to 14 June under the artistic direction of Elena Bashkirova. Argerich was among the festival’s featured artists, performing Beethoven violin sonatas with Boris Brovtsyn and Tatiana Samouil, as well as appearing in Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe with baritone Thomas Bauer. Barenboim, meanwhile, was scheduled to conduct Mozart’s Gran Partita.

Beyond its festival context, the image carries particular significance because it reunites two of classical music’s most celebrated figures, whose friendship stretches back more than seven decades.

Born in Buenos Aires less than two years apart, Argerich and Barenboim first met as children and went on to become two of Argentina’s most internationally acclaimed musicians. Throughout their careers, they have collaborated in concerts, recordings and festivals around the world, forming one of classical music’s most enduring artistic partnerships.

The photograph is also notable because public appearances by Barenboim have become increasingly rare in recent years. In October 2022, he announced that he would be reducing his conducting and other professional engagements for health reasons. He subsequently stepped down as General Music Director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin in January 2023. In February 2025, Barenboim publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Now in their eighties, Argerich and Barenboim remain among the most revered figures in classical music. Their reunion in Berlin offers a poignant reminder of a friendship that began in Buenos Aires and has endured throughout two extraordinary musical careers.
