The Gran Teatre del Liceu has announced a 2026/2027 season that marks a significant turning point for the Barcelona house. With the formal arrival of Jonathan Nott as Music Director and a program that balances heavy-weight tradition with sharp contemporary aesthetics, the theatre is positioning itself as a central hub for European operatic innovation.

Jonathan Nott and the beginning of a new Ring The appointment of Jonathan Nott is the season’s primary catalyst. He will lead the orchestra in a new production of Das Rheingold, directed by Tobias Kratzer, signaling the start of a multi-year Wagnerian cycle. Nott’s influence is expected to bring a more incisive, transparent sound to the Liceu’s pit, a shift that is already generating high expectations among the city’s critics and audiences.

Aida and the visual language of Shirin Neshat The season opens with a high-profile production of Verdi’s Aida. Directed by the acclaimed Iranian artist Shirin Neshat, the production moves away from traditional Egyptian spectacle to focus on themes of exile and political tension. The vocal lineup is equally ambitious, featuring a double cast led by Anna Netrebko and Anna Pirozzi in the title role.

Modernity and dramatic intensity The repertoire for 2026/2027 leans into the visceral. A major highlight is Thomas Adès’ The Exterminating Angel, directed by Calixto Bieito, which brings a surrealist edge to the stage. This is complemented by a new production of Janáček’s Jenůfa featuring the formidable pairing of Asmik Grigorian and Nina Stemme. Other notable entries include Jordi Savall conducting La clemenza di Tito and the return of Pene Pati and Pretty Yende in a fresh look at La bohème.
