In a move that highlights the growing tension surrounding the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO), pianist Lang Lang has publicly urged the institution’s leadership to retain its music director, Andris Nelsons.
Taking to social media, Lang Lang shared a direct appeal to the BSO’s decision-makers in image_ed6840.jpg. “There is no greater pleasure for me than to play with Andris Nelsons and the great Boston Symphony Orchestra,” the pianist wrote, describing the “magic” and “passion” shared by the conductor and the ensemble.
His intervention comes after the BSO Board of Trustees announced in March 2026 that Nelsons’ contract would not be renewed beyond the summer of 2027. The board cited a lack of alignment regarding “future vision,” a statement that has since triggered significant pushback from the orchestra’s own musicians and high-profile international soloists.
“To anyone that makes big decisions at the BSO,” Lang Lang’s message continued, “I know you are working hard to keep music making alive but please, please find a way to keep Andris longer.”
The BSO management has not yet issued a formal response to the latest wave of artist support for Nelsons. The conductor, who has led the orchestra for 13 seasons, previously expressed his disappointment with the board’s decision, stating it was “not the decision I anticipated or wanted.”
This public display of support adds further pressure to the BSO leadership as the classical music community continues to debate the circumstances of the director’s impending departure.
