Vienna State Opera continues its live streaming series with a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin led by Timur Zangiev and staged by Dmitri Tcherniakov, whose psychologically detailed production has become one of the most discussed interpretations of the opera in recent years.

The cast is headed by Asmik Grigorian as Tatyana, alongside Boris Pinkhasovich in the title role and Bogdan Volkov as Lenski. The opera, described by Tchaikovsky as “lyrical scenes,” avoids grand spectacle in favour of emotional intimacy, focusing on the inner conflicts of its characters and the devastating consequences of missed opportunities.

Tcherniakov’s staging places the drama in a contemporary setting while preserving the emotional core of Alexander Pushkin’s story. The production highlights the isolation of Tatyana and the emotional detachment of Onegin, culminating in one of opera’s most painful final scenes.

The Vienna State Opera also notes the historical connection between Eugene Onegin and the house itself: Gustav Mahler conducted the opera in Hamburg after Tchaikovsky withdrew from the engagement, and later chose it as the first premiere of his tenure at the Vienna Hofoper in 1897.

Since the stream is free with registration, this is an excellent opportunity to experience one of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved operas with a major international cast.
