New YUJA documentary explores Yuja Wang’s fame, pressure and pursuit of perfection — watch the trailer

The new film follows the star pianist behind the scenes as she reflects on fame, artistic pressure and the pursuit of perfection. Directed by Lorna Tucker, YUJA is set for release on 10 September.

A new documentary offers an intimate look at Yuja Wang, following the Chinese pianist as she confronts the pressures of international fame, artistic perfection and life at the highest levels of classical music.

Directed by British filmmaker Lorna Tucker, YUJA presents Wang at a pivotal point in her career, moving beyond her virtuosity on stage to explore the personal demands that accompany her status as one of classical music’s most recognisable performers.

According to the film’s official synopsis, Wang embarks on a “deeply personal journey” examining the pressures of fame and the cost of perfection. The documentary explores themes of passion, sacrifice, loneliness and the search for happiness while following a musician whose performances and public image have attracted both extraordinary attention and intense scrutiny.

Behind the public figure

Born in Beijing, Wang began playing the piano at six and studied at Beijing’s Central Conservatory of Music before continuing her training at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia with Gary Graffman.

Her international career developed rapidly, and she signed an exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon in 2009. She has since appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras and conductors and established herself as one of the most prominent pianists of her generation.

The documentary was made with extensive access to Wang’s professional and private life. Among those appearing in the film are Graffman, pianist Emanuel Ax, conductors Michael Tilson Thomas and Teddy Abrams, and Paul Dornian.

“Yuja Wang is a once-in-a-generation talent whose artistry transcends genres,” Tucker said. “This film is a personal exploration of the elements that shape her distinct musical voice.”
