For more than eight decades, the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert from the Wiener Musikverein has marked the start of the year for audiences around the world. Rooted in the Viennese tradition of waltzes, polkas, and dance music, the concert has become one of classical music’s most recognisable rituals — an event for which tickets are normally reserved years in advance.

In 2026, the orchestra is led for the first time in this context by Yannick Nézet-Séguin, whose collaboration with the Vienna Philharmonic dates back to 2010 and includes landmark appearances such as the 2023 Summer Night Concert. His debut New Year’s Concert programme brings together familiar cornerstones of the Strauss dynasty alongside rarer voices of the tradition.

Alongside music by Johann Strauss I and II, Josef Strauss, and Eduard Strauss, the programme features works by Carl Michael Ziehrer, Joseph Lanner, Franz von Suppé, and Hans Christian Lumbye, as well as Josephine Weinlich and Florence Price. Six pieces make their New Year’s Concert debut, offering fresh perspectives within a repertoire closely associated with Viennese musical identity.

For the fifth consecutive year, the entire concert can be followed live via medici.tv, making this emblematic celebration accessible well beyond the Golden Hall of the Musikverein.
