German-based composer Unsuk Chin has been awarded the Grand Prize at the 14th Daewon Music Awards, one of South Korea’s leading distinctions for classical musicians. The announcement was made on May 13 by the Daewon Cultural Foundation.
Pianist Yekwon Sunwoo received the Performance Award, while violinist Kim Seo-hyun was named Emerging Artist Award recipient. The awards ceremony will take place on June 8 in Seoul.
Established in 2006, the Daewon Music Awards were created to support classical musicians and recognize outstanding artistic achievement. The Grand Prize includes approximately 100 million won (around USD 72,000) in prize money, while the Performance and Emerging Artist awards each carry prizes of around 30 million won. Over the years, the awards have honored some of South Korea’s most internationally recognized classical artists.
For Chin, the distinction adds to a remarkable sequence of international honors that has confirmed her position as one of the leading figures in contemporary music. Born in Seoul in 1961, she moved to Hamburg in the 1980s to study with Hungarian composer György Ligeti, an experience that would have a decisive influence on her artistic development. She has been based in Berlin since 1985.
Chin first gained major international attention after winning the Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition for her Violin Concerto. Since then, her music has been performed by many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the Berlin Philharmonic and the New York Philharmonic. Her catalogue ranges from orchestral and chamber works to opera and electronic music, combining refined sonic detail with rhythmic complexity and vivid orchestral imagination.
In recent years, Chin has received a succession of major distinctions. In 2017, she became the first Asian composer to receive the Wihuri Sibelius Prize. She later received the Leonie Sonning Music Prize and the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize, often described as one of classical music’s highest honors. Earlier this year, she was also awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award for what the jury described as her “refined command of sound” and her contribution to expanding the possibilities of contemporary composition.
Alongside her composing career, Chin has also become an influential artistic curator. Since 2022, she has served as artistic director of the Tongyeong International Music Festival, while also leading Taiwan’s Weiwuying International Music Festival.
This year’s Daewon awards also recognized two major Korean performers from different generations. Sunwoo is internationally known for winning the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, while Kim attracted international attention in 2023 after becoming the youngest-ever winner of the Tibor Varga International Violin Competition at the age of 14.
