Ted Huffman appointed Director General of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence

The American stage director Ted Huffman has been appointed Director General of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, starting 1 January 2026. He succeeds Pierre Audi, who passed away in May 2025. During the 2025 edition, Bernard Foccroulle served as adviser to ensure continuity. The 2026 and part of the 2027 seasons were already planned under Audi’s direction.

A long-standing connection with Aix

Huffman’s relationship with the festival goes back more than a decade. He first came to Aix in 2012 as part of the Festival Academy and has since returned regularly, directing several acclaimed productions, including L’incoronazione di Poppea in 2022 and, most recently, Billy Budd, Sailor in 2025.

Before assuming his new post, Huffman will direct Otello—a new production at the Opéra du Rhin opening on 29 October 2025—and Werther at the Opéra Comique in January 2026.

A vision rooted in continuity and renewal

According to Festival Chair Paul Hermelin, the Board’s unanimous decision reflects “a true love story” between Huffman and Aix. Hermelin highlighted that the director’s proposal “combines profound respect for the Festival’s founding values with a boldness that promises new momentum for its future.”

Huffman will oversee the realization of Audi’s programmes for 2026 and part of 2027, while beginning to shape the artistic framework for the 2028 season and beyond.

Collaborations and international career

Known for his refined theatrical sensibility and collaborations with composer Philip Venables—notably on 4.48 Psychosis and Answer Machine Tape, 1987—Huffman has established himself as one of the most original voices of his generation. His appointment at Aix consolidates a career that bridges innovative contemporary opera and a deep respect for the classical repertoire.
