The five-year extension will keep the British conductor at the helm of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and Choir through the 2032/33 season.
Sir Simon Rattle has extended his contract as chief conductor of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Bavarian Radio Choir until 2033. Bayerischer Rundfunk announced the agreement on 8 October.
The extension covers five additional seasons, beginning in 2028/29. Rattle took up the position at the start of the 2023/24 season, with his original contract due to expire at the end of 2027/28.
Welcoming the agreement, BR director-general Katja Wildermuth praised his artistic vision, passion and curiosity, alongside his commitment to bringing music to younger audiences.
Rattle expressed his affection for the orchestra’s musicians and the choir’s singers, describing his happiness working with both ensembles and his enthusiasm for the years ahead.
Since his arrival, his tenure has combined established repertoire with contemporary music, international touring and projects intended to broaden participation in musical life.
