Political intrigue, family reconciliation and some of Verdi’s most psychologically nuanced music come together in Simon Boccanegra, now available to stream free from Dutch National Opera on OperaVision.

Premiered in 1857 and substantially revised in 1881, Simon Boccanegra centres on the former corsair who becomes Doge of Genoa while grappling with personal tragedy and bitter political divisions. At the heart of the opera lies his unexpected reunion with his long-lost daughter Amelia, a relationship that unfolds against a backdrop of revenge, rivalries and struggles for power.

Dutch National Opera’s new production, directed by Jetske Mijnssen, places particular emphasis on the emotional complexity of the father-daughter relationship. Romanian baritone George Petean takes the title role opposite Federica Lombardi as Amelia, while Georg Zeppenfeld sings Jacopo Fiesco and Riccardo Massi appears as Gabriele Adorno.

Fabio Luisi conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in a performance that highlights the richness of Verdi’s mature score, balancing intimate characterisation with sweeping political drama.

The production was recorded in Amsterdam on 13 June 2026 and will be available to watch free on OperaVision from 10 July at 19:00 CEST (17:00 GMT) until 10 November 2026.
