Back in the pit
Riccardo Chailly returned to the podium on Saturday evening at the Teatro alla Scala, conducting Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk just days after a health incident forced the interruption of an earlier performance.
Confirmation from La Scala
Ahead of the performance, La Scala had announced that Chailly’s condition had improved sufficiently for him to resume his duties. The theatre confirmed that the Maestro was able to conduct the opera as scheduled, marking his return to the pit following medical treatment earlier in the week.
Earlier interruption
A previous performance of Shostakovich’s opera had been suspended after Chailly became unwell during the evening and was taken to hospital. The interruption prompted concern among musicians and audience members, with La Scala later reporting a rapid improvement in his condition.
Ongoing commitments
Now in his final season as Music Director of La Scala, Chailly remains closely associated with the theatre and continues to lead the Lucerne Festival through 2028.
