The Pavel Haas Quartet returns to Wigmore Hall with a programme dedicated to two pillars of the Central European chamber repertoire: Dvořák and Schubert. Joining the ensemble are pianist Boris Giltburg and double bassist Petr Ries for Schubert’s radiant Piano Quintet in A major, D667, better known as the ‘Trout’ Quintet.
The evening opens with selections from Dvořák’s Cypresses, a cycle of intimate miniatures originally inspired by the composer’s youthful songs, before moving to the String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96, the celebrated ‘American’ Quartet. Written during Dvořák’s stay in the United States, the work combines Czech lyricism with echoes of American musical landscapes.
After the interval comes Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet, one of the composer’s most joyful chamber works. Written during a summer holiday in Upper Austria, the quintet remains admired for its luminous textures, conversational writing, and the famous variations on Schubert’s song Die Forelle.
