Maurice Steger, the Swiss recorder virtuoso and conductor, leads the Frankfurt Radio Symphony in a full performance of Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 1–6, live from Frankfurt’s hr-Sendesaal.
The Brandenburgs are a highlight of Bach’s orchestral output—celebrated for their lively contrasts, colorful instrumentation, and structural inventiveness. Performed as a full cycle, they reveal a broader vision: one that emphasizes variety, dialogue, and balance among instrumental voices.
Steger brings a special touch to the program. Known for his mastery of the recorder, he highlights the subtle but intricate role the instrument plays in these works—particularly in the first and fourth concertos. With a handpicked group of soloists and the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, this concert promises a compelling interpretation of these Baroque masterpieces.
OVERVIEW
Johann Sebastian Bach titled his set of six concertos in French: Six Concerts avec plusieurs instruments—”six concertos with several instruments.” Today known as the Brandenburg Concertos, these works are neither traditional solo concertos nor standard concerti grossi. Instead, they represent Bach’s inventive exploration of how different instrumental combinations can interact.
Each concerto has its own distinctive character, and together they form a vibrant showcase of instrumental collaboration. From virtuosic dialogues to rich ensemble textures, the Brandenburgs stand as one of the most iconic collections in Baroque music.
