Deutsche Grammophon has released a new recording of Arvo Pärt’s Hymn to a Great City, performed by Martha Argerich and Georgijs Osokins, to mark the Estonian composer’s 90th birthday this year (11 September). The track is now available for streaming on all major platforms.Arte.TV
The collaboration was born during the Martha Argerich Festival in Hamburg in 2025, following Osokins’s performance of Pärt’s solo works and Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque No. 2 with Gidon Kremer and Giedrė Dirvanauskaitė. Inspired by that evening, Argerich — who had never performed Pärt’s music before — decided to record the piece for two pianos alongside the young Latvian pianist.
The session took place late at night at the Laeiszhalle, capturing the spontaneity and warmth of the moment. The result is not only a tribute to Pärt but also a symbolic gesture from one of the great figures of the piano world to a new generation of artists.
