A moment between Martha Argerich and Daniel Barenboim at the Berlin Philharmonie

The Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra shared today a striking black-and-white photograph capturing a tender moment between Daniel Barenboim and Martha Argerich during the orchestra’s recent European tour, which included a stop at the Berlin Philharmonie. In the image, Barenboim gently kisses Argerich’s hand as she smiles—an intimate gesture that reflects a lifelong friendship stretching back more than seven decades.

Argerich and Barenboim met as children in Buenos Aires, where both were recognised early as prodigiously gifted musicians. Their friendship endured as their international careers took shape, and in adulthood they occasionally collaborated on stage, most notably in chamber performances and piano duos that revealed a rare artistic affinity. Their bond has long been regarded as one of the most meaningful personal and musical connections in the classical world.

The Rotterdam Philharmonic wrote:
“We were very honored to have the legendary Daniel Barenboim in our rehearsal and concert in the Berliner Philharmonie. Witnessing his lifelong friendship with Martha Argerich touched our hearts. Whilst sharing this beautiful moment with you all, we also want to say a big thank to Martha for the concerts she played with us during this tour. It is always a great pleasure sharing the stage with her, and we wish her well.”

In recent years, Barenboim has been managing health issues that led him to reduce his overall schedule and step down from several long-held positions. Even so, he continues to conduct selectively and remains a central artistic presence in Berlin, where his appearances still draw deep admiration. His visit to the Rotterdam Philharmonic’s rehearsal and concert—and this reunion with Argerich—added special resonance to their Berlin stop.
